It ~is~ a technical thing to NOT stitch through the gathering thread. Keep the gathering thread tight through the pleats you are working on. Move the pleats apart so you can see the gathering thread as you stitch. Try additional magnification too, many times that helps.

Thank you for this post. I am always afraid of pricking the gathering thread by stitching directly on it.
